October 3rd Fall Fest Party
& Historic Women's Organizations Exhibit Headline the News
from the Halifax Historical Museum
The "Pioneer Networking Women's Organizations of Volusia
County" exhibit is on display at The Halifax Historical Museum
through November 1, 2008. These local women's organizations
cover a span of over 100 years. Through the years the organizations
have given continued service to the community through education,
scholarships, workshops and seminars. Generations of organizational
women have contributed to and inspired our Halifax Community. The
Palmetto Club started with a small group of women meeting in a
local home in 1894. One of their first battle cries was 'Down
with Cows and Muddy Streets'. It continues to work for the
betterment of Daytona Beach to this day. The League of Women Voters
had to also deal with cows in all the wrong places. Two cows showed
up at a LWV meeting in 1931, prompting the League to write a letter
to get cows off the streets. It educated voters without bias. Dr.
Mary McLeod Bethune started the National Council for Negro Women in
1935. With its Black History Brain Bowl programs, the Daytona Beach
section has been an integral part of young peoples' education
ever since. Their motto 'We leave no one behind'. The Gamma
Mu Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, 1941, sponsors its
Men of Tomorrow and Ivy Reading AKAdemy. The Abigail Bartholomew
Chapter of the DAR has been promoting history since 1908. The
Links, Inc. has been Empowering Youth to Succeed through multiple
programs since 1958. The Peninsula Club has been a staple of
community service since 1900. The Halifax Historical Museum is
proud to honor their history and service.
